Family-run restaurant in Scotland

"Loch Leven's Larder" in Kinross is a family-run restaurant set amidst the picturesque landscape of Scotland, offering a unique combination of café, grocery store, and gift shop. It is located right on the Loch Leven Heritage Trail and is surrounded by the fields of its own farm, providing an idyllic setting with spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding nature. The restaurant opened in 2005 and has since become a popular destination for nature lovers, foodies, and families looking to explore the region. The philosophy of the establishment revolves around fresh, local produce and promoting a “field-to-fork” approach, with many ingredients sourced directly from its own farm or local producers.

Café with local products

The cuisine at Loch Leven's Larder is diverse, featuring a selection of dishes that combine both traditional Scottish elements and modern influences. A standout is the “Farmer’s Breakfast,” a hearty breakfast with sausages, bacon, and eggs from the farm, served with freshly baked bread, promising a robust start to the day. For a lighter option, there is “Smashed Avocado on Toasted Sourdough,” which delights with its creamy texture and a hint of lemon. The “Seafood Chowder” is also very popular—a warming soup with fresh fish and shellfish that captures the maritime richness of Scotland. For dessert, the “Brioche Eggy Bread with Berry Compote” is a sweet treat that impresses with its fluffy texture and fruity accompaniment. The dishes are offered in two different cafés: the Larder Café with table service and the somewhat more informal Greenhouse Café, which features long tables and plenty of light.

Local craft beers in Kinross

The drink selection is equally appealing and focuses on quality. There is a range of local craft beers that reflect the diversity of Scottish breweries, as well as an impressive collection of gins and whiskies, including some exclusive varieties like the “Winter Gin” produced in-house. Coffee lovers can enjoy high-quality coffee, often praised as the perfect complement to the homemade cakes and pastries. The option to order food and drinks to go makes the restaurant particularly attractive for hikers exploring the Heritage Trail while enjoying the views.

Relaxed breakfast in nature

The atmosphere at Loch Leven's Larder is warm and inviting, characterized by the natural beauty of the surroundings and a rustic yet well-kept decor. The Larder Café offers views of the fields and the lake through large windows, while the Greenhouse Café creates a relaxed ambiance with its bright, open design and cozy sofas. Outside, there is a covered terrace and two private "pods" that can be reserved for special occasions, providing an intimate setting. The restaurant is dog-friendly and features a play area for children, making it a perfect spot for families. The service is often described as warm and attentive, with staff proud to share the history of the farm and the origins of the products with guests.

Got here and sat outside with our dogs. Eventually after about 15 mins a staff member sauntered over and asked if we were wanting table service for food. Given that it was the table service area the answer was yes. He left us for 10 mins with the menu. Didn’t ask if we wanted a drink. Came back and told us the kitchen was now closed. Thing is: it wasn’t closed when we sat down and keeping us waiting was the issue. He frankly couldn’t have cared less. We won’t be back, we were basically dismissed by disinterested staff. Really not a good look to take custom for granted. Sorry we can’t revue the food, we were refused service. Please note: we arrived over an hour and a half earlier than the advertised closing time. What a wasted journey.

Today, I visited Loch Leven's Larder with my family and enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Greenhouse Café. It’s always great to spend time together in such a beautiful setting, but dining out comes with extra challenges for me due to my health conditions. I have to be extremely careful to ensure that no plastic comes into contact with any of my food or drinks. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly accommodating. The chef personally came out to speak with me, taking the time to understand my dietary needs and ensuring that everything was prepared safely. It’s not often that you receive such thoughtful, attentive service, and I truly appreciated their willingness to go the extra mile. The experience was fantastic—the food was excellent, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and most importantly, I felt completely at ease knowing that my needs were taken seriously. Loch Leven’s Larder really went above and beyond, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal in a caring and customer-focused environment.

Lovely views , food nice , service can be poor if you are outside under the canopy as no one seems to check the tables for new customers? Easy access to lovely walks around Loch Leven

Lovely cafe and shop. Gorgeous location to start a day of adventure. The staff and atmosphere were lovely, the food is good. Recommend a visit for a tea/coffee and a shop before heading out to explore.

Enjoyable food, but service was slow and poor. Settling bill way more difficult than it needs to be and according to manager is a conscious choice

Shockingly expensive, £22.85 for 1 small coffee, 1 tea, 1 soup, 1 sandwich and 2 glasses of water. small coffee £3.75 plus £1 for a shot of vanilla and 75 p for oat milk . Virtually no choice of gluten and dairy free products. Only one choice of soup served in a small mug. Toilets not as clean as you would expect and cafe staff unhelpful and made you feel you were an inconvenience to them.
